Well, well, well...it seems that President William J. Clinton's administration was quite adept at
spying and phone tapping as well. They listened in on Princess Diana's private conversations without the knowledge of their British counterparts. At least the current administration consulted with our allies before undertaking anti-terrorist surveillance. From the
Chicago Sun-Times [
emphasis mine-QC]:
LONDON -- An official British report into the 1997 car crash that killed Princess Diana will say the U.S. Secret Service was bugging her phone on the night of her death, according to the London newspaper the Observer.
The paper said Stevens would report that the U.S. Secret Service was bugging Diana's phone without the approval of its British counterpart on the night of her death.
Did she have
some dirt on Billy Jeff that he wanted kept quiet perhaps? We may never know.
