NO MORE RED DOUBLE-DECKER BUSES IN LONDON

Oh..my..God! I can't believe they've gotten rid of one of the signatures of London!

Why don't they just tear down Big Ben! Pave Hyde Park! Turn Buckingham Palace into a Youth Hostel! Dig up Diana and rebury her in something off the rack!

What were they thinking!

Thanks to reader CoolBuddha for letting me know that London will still have Red Double Decker buses - just a new modern version. It still won't be the same though!

We have museums too. At least when they are stationary you can't fall off, which was a hazard with the Routemaster. And we do still have red double deckers, but with doors!

I'm afraid I mention you in my blog. Although I can't celebrate your politics, you were a catalyst. Hope you find it OK.

What has happened is that Arriva Buses have withdrawn the last Routemaster double-decker, open backed bus, which required a conductor as well as a driver, as that route has gone driver-only operation. The Routemaster buses were popular because you could hop on and off at any time, although it was discouraged. They caused accidents - the American singer Dionne Warwicke fell off one and broke her leg here in 1964. There's a press release here:

Originally, letter boxes, telephone boxes and Hansom Cabs were all painted Blue in London. However, when cars were introduced, the drivers could not see the blue very well in London fogs. They were all repainted red so drivers could see them better. Accidents were reduced, so the colour red stayed.

Nice blog, but I appreciate that a Conservative in America is quite different from a Conservative here in the UK.
