Ron Silver: July 2, 1946 - March 15, 2009

Actor Ron Silver Dies In NYC At Age 62 Of Cancer
Actor Ron Silver, who won a Tony Award as a take-no-prisoners Hollywood producer in David Mamet's "Speed-the-Plow" and did a political about-face from loyal Democrat to Republican activist after the Sept. 11 attacks, died Sunday at the age of 62.

"Ron Silver died peacefully in his sleep with his family around him early Sunday morning" in New York City, said Robin Bronk, executive director of the Creative Coalition, which Silver helped found. "He had been fighting esophageal cancer for two years."

Silver, an Emmy nominee for a recurring role as a slick strategist for liberal President Jed Bartlet on "The West Wing," had a long history of balancing acting with left-leaning social and political causes.

But after the 2001 terrorist attacks, longtime Democrat Silver turned heads in Hollywood with outspoken support of President George W. Bush over the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Silver spoke at the 2004 Republican National Convention, began referring to himself as a "9/11 Republican" and reregistered as an independent.

Don't Say You Weren't Warned...

The dark night of fascism is always descending in the United States and yet lands only in Europe. - Tom Wolfe (Referencing French Socialist Jean-François Revel)

The Far Right Is On The March Again: The Rise Of Fascism In Austria
In Austria's recent general election, nearly 30 per cent of voters backed extremist right-wing parties. Live visits the birthplace of Hitler to investigate how Fascism is once again threatening to erupt across Europe. [...]

Last September, Austria’s far right gained massive political influence in an election that saw the FPO along with another far right party – Alliance For The Future (BZO) – gain 29 per cent of the vote, the same share as Austria’s main party, the Social Democrats. The election stirred up terrifying memories of the rise of the Nazi Party in the Thirties.

And just as the Nazis gained power on the back of extreme nationalism and virulent anti-Semitism, the recent unprecedented gains in Austria were made on a platform of fear about immigration and the perceived threat of Islam. FPO leader Heinz Christian Strache, for example, described women in Islamic dress as ‘female ninjas’.

Emboldened by the new power in parliament, neo-Nazi thugs have desecrated Muslim graves. Recently, in Hitler’s home town of Braunau, a swastika flag was publicly unveiled.

The FPO wants to legalise Nazi symbols, while its firebrand leader has been accused of having links to far right extremists.

After the FPO’s election victory, Nick Griffin, leader of the British Nationalist Party (BNP), sent a personal message to Strache.

‘We in Britain are impressed to see that you have been able to combine principled nationalism with electoral success. We are sure that this gives you a good springboard for the European elections and we hope very much that we will be able to join you in a successful nationalist block in Brussels next year.’

The message followed on from a secret meeting last May in which a high-ranking FPO politician paid a visit to London for a meeting with Griffin.

The relationship between the FPO and the BNP becomes more worrying as I learn of the strong links between Austria’s political party and hard-line Nazis.

A Bad Case Of "Now What?" Syndrome

Via Reuters Vaunted Obama Message Machine Is Off-key
At the White House, spokesman Robert Gibbs reacted defensively, saying Obama has only been in office seven weeks and it should be no surprise that "all of the problems that took many years to take hold haven't necessarily been solved."

Obama, at Tuesday's education event, rejected criticism that he is trying to do too many things at once, citing three predecessors who managed to juggle challenges on many fronts --Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt and John Kennedy.

"President Kennedy didn't have the luxury of choosing between civil rights and sending us to the moon. And we don't have the luxury of choosing between getting our economy moving now and rebuilding it over the long term," he said.
What was it Lloyd Bentsen said about John F. Kennedy?

What Happened To That Wall?

Minnesota State Agency Offers Islamic Mortgages
For many Minnesota Muslims, it's been virtually impossible to buy a home, because Islamic law forbids the paying or charging of interest. To help close the home ownership gap among Muslim immigrants, the state's housing agency has launched a new program offering Islamic mortgages.

Islamic law does make exceptions to the ban on interest, if one's family is at stake. But the exceptions are open to interpretation and for many observant Muslims, conventional mortgages are strictly taboo.

Nawawi Sheikh is one of them. The Somali-American said he and his wife just couldn't go against their beliefs, even if it meant giving up their dream of owning a home. Still, he grew tired of moving from one rented apartment to another.
Well boo hoo, Nawai. What happened to making choices?
Here's how the mortgage, known as Murabaha financing or "cost plus sale," works:

The state buys a home and resells it to the buyer at a higher price. The down payment and monthly installments are agreed to up front at current mortgage rates.

The deal is identical to a thirty-year fixed-rate loan, except there's no additional interest, because the higher up-front price factors in payments that would have been made over the life of a traditional mortgage.

A handful of private banks and lending institutions offer Islamic mortgages in the U.S., but Minnesota Housing is the first state agency to offer such a product. The program is the brainchild of Hussein Samatar, director of the African Development Center in Minneapolis.

"The process is different, but the outcome will look the same," Samatar said. "We wanted to be as conventional as possible, while respecting the tenets of Islam."
Hey Mr. Samatar, it's not the state's business to find ways to accommodate Islam or any other religion. What happened to that "wall of separation" we hear about from the ACLU all the time? They must think it's only meant to separate Jewish or Christian religion and state. I really wouldn't have a problem with this Murabaha business if it was a private group or agency offering these "loans", but to have the State of Minnesota running this program is hypocritical at best. This program better be available to anyone in Minnesota regardless of religion.

Wikipedia... On The "Fringes"

Via the Telegraph
An in-depth report by the online publication WorldNetDaily.com alleged that any negativity surrounding Mr Obama has been deliberately deleted by the online encyclopedia.

Topics routinely "scrubbed", it was claimed, include Mr Obama's alleged ties with such controversial figures as the so-called Weatherman terrorist, Bill Ayers, as well as the religious leader, Rev Jeremiah Wright, even though users had complied with Wikipedia rules requiring them to link additions to credible reports from news outlets.

"The current paragraph on Obama's religion contains no mention of Rev Jeremiah Wright, even though Obama's association with the controversial pastor was one of the most talked about issues during the presidential campaign," the report said. [...]

By contrast, the study found that coverage pertaining to Mr Obama's predecessor George W. Bush is far from favourable.

For instance, issues such as Mr Bush's alleged battle with substance abuse, along with criticism of his handling of Hurricane Katrina, were easy to find on his entry.

Angela Starling, a spokesperson for Wikipedia, denied that the US president had received preferential treatment.

Mrs Starling said that administrators "are simply people who are trusted by the other community members to have access to some extra tools that allow them to delete pages and perform other tasks that help the encyclopedia".

Obama's New High Inquisitor Of The Economy

Obama economist more bullish than CFOs
The designated chair of President Barack Obama's Council of Economic Advisers predicts the economy will see "positive growth by the end of this year."

This assessment by Christina Romer, made at a "Credit Crisis on Main Street Summit" in Washington, D.C., Feb. 19, is more optimistic than the view held by private-sector chief financial officers.

Romer told summit attendees an anecdote that illustrated the pressure Obama's economic advisers face. She joined Obama's transition team after Thanksgiving, and personally gave the president-elect the news about the 500,000 jobs the economy lost in November.

"I'm so sorry," she told Obama. Obama replied, "It's not your fault -- yet."

At least it BETTER show positive growth by the end of 2009... or else!

I thought exactly the same thing the first time I saw Umbridge... uh, I mean Romer... I better be careful, or it'll be the blood quill for me.
