Obama Says He's Outraged By Former Pastor's Comments

Democrat Barack Obama said Tuesday he was outraged by the latest assertion by his former pastor that criticism of his fiery sermons is an attack on the black church. [...]

"I gave him the benefit of the doubt in my speech in Philadelphia explaining that he's done enormous good. ... But when he states and then amplifies such ridiculous propositions as the U.S. government somehow being involved in AIDS. ... There are no excuses. They offended me. They rightly offend all Americans and they should be denounced."

Is it just me or does the Rev. Wright suddenly sound meaner and more strident this time around? Don't be fooled by this political theater. It's a ploy to allow Obama a "do over" in dealing with the controversy. I mean come on, after spending 20 years in Trinity's pews and his half-hearted response to the initial brouhaha, no one believes Obama doesn't agree with what that church teaches. So they're just replaying the whole issue again so Obama and all of his supporters can act righteously outraged and look like they've rebuked the good reverend.

For Pity's Sake Man, It's A CAMPAIGN!

John McCain, still wussing out on the campaign trail. Have you seen this story? Apparently he doesn't like an ad being run in North Carolina against the state’s Democrat gubernatorial candidates. He's demanding the ad be withdrawn. I guess he only likes cursing at and working against his own party.

"I have been committed to running a respectful campaign based upon an honest debate about the great issues confronting America today. I expect all state parties to do so as well. The television advertisement you are planning to air degrades our civics and distracts us from the very real differences we have with the Democrats," said McCain in a letter to the North Carolina Republican Party Chair Linda Davis.

McCain demanded that Davis discontinue plans to run the ad: "It is imperative that you withdraw this offensive advertisement."

Goddamn! What does McCain think this is? A tea party? Jeebus! The GOP picked a loser. Hillary will clean his respectful and honest clock.

Obama’s Former Pastor Getting $1.6M Home in Retirement

A two-week FOX News investigation, however, has uncovered where Wright will be spending a good deal of his time in retirement, and it is a far cry from the impoverished Chicago streets where the preacher led his ministry for 36 years.

FOX News has uncovered documents that indicate Wright is about to move to a 10,340-square-foot, four-bedroom home in suburban Chicago, currently under construction in a gated community.

It doesn't look like whitey is keeping Jeremiah down, does it? A gated community? Why on earth does he feel the need to be behind gates, hmmm? I'll you why, because he doesn't want to hobnob with the people he panders to with his "social gospel" and black liberation rhetoric.

The Reverend Wright speaks to Italian voters...

Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., pastor emeritus of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago where Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has been a member for two decades, slurred Italians in a piece published in the most recent issue of Trumpet Newsmagazine.

"(Jesus') enemies had their opinion about Him," Wright wrote in a eulogy of the late scholar Asa Hilliard in the November/December 2007 issue. "The Italians for the most part looked down their garlic noses at the Galileans."

Wright continued, "From the circumstances surrounding Jesus' birth (in a barn in a township that was under the Apartheid Roman government that said his daddy had to be in), up to and including the circumstances surrounding Jesus' death on a cross, a Roman cross, public lynching Italian style. ...

"He refused to be defined by others and Dr. Asa Hilliard also refused to be defined by others. The government runs everything from the White House to the schoolhouse, from the Capitol to the Klan, white supremacy is clearly in charge, but Asa, like Jesus, refused to be defined by an oppressive government because Asa got his identity from an Omnipotent God."

Just keep playing that Trumpet, Reverend, the tune is sweet music...

He Has A Nightmare...

The result is a lowering of the bar for the next racial outburst, since the perpetrator will immediately resort to the Obama defenses.

That's what Victor Davis Hanson says that Obama's speech hath wrought; and he's "wright"...

I predict Obama has bequeathed to us a new lexicon, a novel way to explain away racist outbursts.

Obama has sanctified the doctrines of moral equivalence (the private racial slight is balanced by the televised public hatred; everyone has a pastor in some ways like Wright, etc.) and contextualization (you must understand Wright's context and background; the good that he does; the protocols of the black church, etc.). The result is a lowering of the bar for the next racial outburst, since the perpetrator will immediately resort to the Obama defenses. And since we now know that Obama heard some of these "controversial" Wright sermons and did not object, we can see that his earlier, once just condemnation of someone like Imus — like many of his initial defenses of Wright — may now be inoperative:

"I understand MSNBC has suspended Mr. Imus. But I would also say that there's nobody on my staff who would still be working for me if they made a comment like that about anybody of any ethnic group. And I would hope that NBC ends up having that same attitude. ... He didn't just cross the line. He fed into some of the worst stereotypes that my two young daughters are having to deal with today in America. The notions that as young African-American women — who I hope will be athletes — that that somehow makes them less beautiful or less important. It was a degrading comment. It's one that I'm not interested in supporting." (October 2007)

The new sophistic Obama, however, would recount to us all the charity work and good that Imus had once done and still does, that we don't understand the joshing of the shock-jock radio genre that winks and nods at controversy in theatrical ways, that Imus was a legend and pioneer among talk show hosts, that Obama's own black relatives have on occasions expressed prejudicial statements about whites similar to what Imus does, that we all have our favorite talk shows, whose hosts occasionally cross the line, and that he can't quite remember whether he'd ever been on the Imus show, or whether he ever had heard Imus say anything that was insensitive — and therefore he could not and would not disown a Don Imus.

This is the real message of the Obama racial transcendence candidacy.

I've heard many people defending both the not so Rev. Wright and Trinity UCC on the grounds that they do so many good works. I call bullshit. Would those same people support or defend Pat Robertson or The Salvation Army because their ministries do good work? What about Hamas or Hezbollah? Motives aside it cannot be denied that those two terrorist organizations do provide charity for their communities. But at what price do these good works come? Maybe nothing monetary, but you can’t tell me the abhorrent theology of that church exists only in the pulpit; it must permeate everything they do and teach.

Jamie at I Must Be Dreaming sums it up nicely.

While I am absolutely certain that Obama is at heart a patriot who wishes nothing but the best for America, the pattern I see emerging is one that makes me wonder if what he thinks is best for America is what I think is best for America. Change is good, but not merely for change’s sake. And the fact that his core Christian belief system was nurtured by such a man as Rev. Wright only helps to call Obama’s values, judgment, and experience all into question.

Obama Has Some 'Splainin To Do...

Via RightWingSparkle... Obama's first real problem: His pastor Rev. Wright

No matter how one feels about the race issues, Wright's preaching is a big turn off and quite frankly, nutty to those not in his camp.

Obama is trying to dismiss concerns saying "I don't think my church is actually particularly controversial." He said Rev. Wright "is like an old uncle who says things I don't always agree with," telling a Jewish group that everyone has someone like that in their family.

Well then, let's discuss what you don't agree with him on. Let's flesh it out. It's time to be honest.

Some facts: Obama joined Trinity because of the Rev. Wright. Obama has been a member of Trinity for over 20 years. In 2006 Obama donated over $22,000 to Trinity. The Rev. Wright married the Obama's, baptized their children, and Barack took the title of his book 'The Audacity of Hope' from one of Wright's sermons.

What the heck part of what goes on there doesn't Obama agree with? Do you think a GOP candidate who was a member of Jerry Falwell's church (Thomas Road Baptist) would be getting such a pass? What about a GOP candidate that donated $22K to the 700 Club just because they do good work? ("Oh, never mind Pat Robertson" they'd say, "he's just like an old uncle who says things I don't always agree with.") Oh hell no they wouldn't be off the hook. CNN would be rioting in their news room. NPR would swoon. Democratic Underground would stroke out and MoveOn.org might actually have a bowel movement.

Look, I'm a proud Baptist and I know as a whole the denomination I belong too has views I do not agree with. However my particular church and my pastor were carefully chosen, and they too share my misgivings and disagreements with our denomination. I don't have to worry about renouncing my church or my pastor, as Obama has now renounced his. Why? Because I agree with them and wouldn't be a member there if I did not. Obama is trying to dance on the head of a pin already crowded with angels. I'm with commenter Jill over at RWS, there's a pattern that's becoming apparent:

Since hearing of the America hating Rev. Wright, it puts all the other head scratching things Obama and his wife have done in perspective:

Obama not doing the pledge of allegiance

Obama refusing to wear the flag lapel

Michelle saying she's finally proud of her country

Michelle saying America is a mean country.

These things all are forming a pattern, and from now on the excuse of "taking it out of context" won't work. And has anyone noticed Michelle's absence lately? I think she's being muzzled ala Theresa Heinz Kerry.

Plus Reverend Wright just retired last month? Had that been planned? Because the timing is veeery convenient.

I'm sure a lot of people are going to be experiencing buyers remorse in the next few weeks. This is why you don't just jump on the bandwagon of someone you don't know anything about. Choosing someone because they are an inspiring speaker isn't enough. Obama is starting to scare me, and it's pretty bad when next to him Hillary is actually looking patriotic.

It's slipped out in little ways throughout the campaign, but they are adding up as fast as an adjustable rate mortgage. I think people may see his renunciation as a little too late and little too disingenuous after such a long relationship. The teflon is starting to flake. B. Hussein Obama has some explaining to do.
