Why Am I Not A Bit Surprised?

Joe The Plumber Says McCain "Appalled" Him
"Joe the Plumber" told conservative radio host Glenn Beck on Tuesday that he felt "dirty" after hitting the campaign trail with Republican presidential nominee John McCain and "seeing some of the things that take place," Politico reported.

Joe Wurzelbacher said he was specifically put off by McCain when it came to talk of the $700 billion bailout.

"When I was on the bus with him, I asked him a lot of questions about the bailout because most Americans did not want that to happen," Wurzelbacher told Beck. "I asked him some pretty direct questions. Some of the answers you guys are gonna receive they appalled me, absolutely.
But he only felt that way about half the ticket. According to Joe, Sarah Palin "is absolutely the real deal..." That doesn't surprise me either. Believe it or not, I actually hate that I was right about McCain, but like Joe I came to feel there was no other choice. Unfortunately.

Gooses & Ganders

Obama Effigy Found On University Of Kentucky Campus
University of Kentucky authorities were investigating Wednesday who hanged an effigy of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama from a tree on campus.

College spokesman Carl Nathe said the effigy was found Wednesday morning. Police immediately took it down. A faculty member said he saw the effigy with a noose around its neck, hanging from a high tree branch.

University President Lee Todd said he planned to apologize to the Obama family on behalf of the school and that he is "personally offended and deeply embarrassed by this disgusting episode."

Federal authorities have been notified, Todd said. He said the effigy violates the university's code of ethics and won't be tolerated.
Hey what's the big deal? It's that time of year after all! "It should be seen as art, and as within the month of October. It's Halloween, it's time to be scary, it's time to be spooky..."

Obama Campaign Becomes A Bunch Of Crybabies Over A Tough Interview

And so Biden, the VP of THE ONE, knelt before him and said: "Wah wah wah... that mean on old television station asked me hard questions, Obamessiah! Showeth them your wrath! Wah wah wah!" And so THE ONE brought down his wrath upon the station and refused to showeth them his face or speaketh to them, and his prophet Laura K. McGinnis wrote unto them saying: "...further opportunities for your station to interview with this campaign are unlikely, at best for the duration of the remaining days until the election..."

Here's the interview:

Personally I thought Biden handled himself uncharacteristically well. Why is Obama's campaign acting like a bunch of thuggish crybabies? If Obama's administration can't handle a tough interview how are they going to handle the "test" that will afflict THE ONE within the first six months of his reign?

Steyn On Biden

From a conversation between Mark Steyn and Hugh Hewitt:
Steyn: No, that’s simply the rules of the game. In a sense, Biden, my worry is this, that I think Biden’s gaffes are like Clinton’s women, that once you get to over a certain number, they don’t count anymore. And when you, the other problem, I think, is he’s such a parodically vain, glorious buffoon, this remark he made, quoted I think in the Boston Globe yesterday, that the minute Russian tanks rolled into Georgia, the president of Georgia was on the phone to him saying Joe, are you coming? You’ve got to come, Joe, like as if every country that gets invaded by the Russkies has to have Joe Biden on speed dial, who are you going to call. I mean, he’s such a parodically vain, glorious, self-aggrandizing buffoon that in an odd way, it may come over rather likeably. And I have a concern that those of us who think that Joe Biden is just an obvious laughing stock may be neglecting the fact that actually his likeability factor may be rather higher than we suspect.

Hewitt: I never thought Ted Baxter would do well in presidential politics, but evidently there’s a case for the Ted Baxter factor.

Steyn: Yeah, and I think there is a Ted Baxter element to it. And in fact, the great Ted Baxter joke, where he offers Mary Tyler Moore a complete autographed set of Winston Churchill’s History Of The English-Speaking Peoples, and Mary goes what, autographed by Churchill, and Ted Baxter goes no, Mary, autographed by me.
That about sums up Biden.

Snow Job

Biden is an exaggerator. He can't help himself. For example, saying his helicopter was "forced down" in Afghanistan during a speech to the National Guard Association about the war in Afghanistan - leaving the distinct impression that the Taliban nearly got him!
"Ladies and gentlemen, where are we now? Where are we now?" Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., said to the National Guard Association today, talking about the war in Afghanistan.

"If you want to know where Al Qaeda lives, you want to know where Bin Laden is, come back to Afghanistan with me," Biden said. "Come back to the area where my helicopter was forced down, with a three-star general and three senators at 10,500 feet in the middle of those mountains. I can tell you where they are."

Biden said that Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., "says he’ll follow them to the gates of hell. You don’t have to go to hell. Just go to Pakistan. Just go to that area. That superhighway of terror that exists between Afghanistan and Pakistan."
Relax though, good ol' Joe was just caught in a blizzard and the chopper pilot thought it best not to keep flying:
In February 2008, Biden -- along with Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Chuck Hagel, R-Neb. -- was on a chopper that made an emergency landing in the mountains of Afghanistan.

A snowstorm had forced them down.

No one was injured, and the Associated Press reported at the time that "the senators and their delegation returned to Bagram Air Base in a motor convoy, and left for Turkey.
This was the second time he told the story, by the way. Neil Kinnock must have told a similar story that struck Biden's fancy.

Cold Busted

Smears on Palin traced back to the Obama campaign. Someone could be in big trouble. The Jawa Report has the details.
Extensive research was conducted by the Jawa Report to determine the source of smears directed toward Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Those smears included false allegations that she belonged to a secessionist political party and that she has radical anti-American views.

Our research suggests that a subdivision of one of the largest public relations firms in the world most likely started and promulgated rumors about Sarah Palin that were known to be false. These rumors were spread in a surreptitious manner to avoid exposure.

It is also likely that the PR firm was paid by outside sources to run the smear campaign. While not conclusive, evidence suggests a link to the Barack Obama campaign. Namely:

  • Evidence suggests that a YouTube video with false claims about Palin was uploaded and promoted by members of a professional PR firm.
  • The family that runs the PR firm has extensive ties to the Democratic Party, the netroots, and are staunch Obama supporters.
  • Evidence suggests that the firm engaged in a concerted effort to distribute the video in such a way that it would appear to have gone viral on its own. Yet this effort took place on company time.
  • Evidence suggests that these distribution efforts included actions by at least one employee of the firm who is unconnected with the family running the company.
  • The voice-over artist used in this supposedly amateur video is a professional.
  • This same voice-over artist has worked extensively with David Axelrod's firm, which has a history of engaging in phony grassroots efforts, otherwise known as "astroturfing."
  • David Axelrod is Barack Obama's chief media strategist.
  • The same voice-over artist has worked directly for the Barack Obama campaign.
This suggests that false rumors and outright lies about Sarah Palin and John McCain being spread on the internet are being orchestrated by political partisans and are not an organic grassroots phenomenon led by the left wing fringe. Our findings follow.
Predictably all the videos have begun disappearing quicker than Falun Gong practitioners in China... What are they trying to hide? Ace gives some background and chimes in.

Rare Honesty

Rarely does a Democrat just flat out say "we want to redistribute your wealth!" Joe Biden (worst VP pick ever?) has no such qualms:
"We want to take money and put it back in the pocket of middle-class people," Biden said in an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America."

Noting that wealthier Americans would indeed pay more, Biden said: "It's time to be patriotic ... time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut."
We'll see if the honest approach works for them. I have a feeling it won't, even with the clumsy appeal to patriotism. Of course we should cut them some slack since "patriotic" is not an emotion they're used to invoking.

And You Thought Ben Affleck Was The Dumb One

Via Ace: Matt Damon, Genius
Matt Damon wants to know if Sarah Palin believed dinosaurs lived 4000 years ago.

The source for this absurd claim?

This. An utterly absurd viral email, supposedly containing "real quotes" from an Anchorage newspaper... but notice -- No links! No actual citation to anything appearing in real newspaper!

Also noted these quotes are positively absurd. I believe they were first written as a pure parody (dinosaurs are... "lizards of Satan"? Really?), but of course the reality-based community adherents of the community-based reality has accepted them uncritically as "real."

How absurd is this? Do these sound like real quotes, or parodies?

And yet Matt Damon, Genius, thinks we ought to trust his judgment as to who the next President and Vice President should be.
Good Actor. Political dumbass.

Sarah Get Your Gun!

A new species of cervidae discovered... From Quid Nimis:
Obambi (Dukakis carteroides): Subspecies of Deer. Likes to talk, and gaze pensively into the distance, making it a very easy target. It never actually does anything, except run for office. Scared of guns of women who know how to use guns.
They also startle easily when confronted with tough decisions, usually responding with their standard call of distress - "present!"

Obama Campaign Calls McCain Ad (On Bridge To Nowhere) A 'Lie'

Democrats - They're What's For Breakfast!

Come on, you knew they'd call her racist sooner than later.
“So Sambo beat the bitch!”

This is how Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin described Barack Obama’s win over Hillary Clinton to political colleagues in a restaurant a few days after Obama locked up the Democratic Party presidential nomination.

According to
Lucille, the waitress serving her table at the time and who asked that her last name not be used, Gov. Palin was eating lunch with five or six people when the subject of the Democrat’s primary battle came up. The governor, seemingly not caring that people at nearby tables would likely hear her, uttered the slur and then laughed loudly as her meal mates joined in appreciatively.
Yeah. Palin strikes me as the kind of person who'd do such a thing. What nerve she has to call Hillary a bitch! Remember, Lucille, Todd Palin is part aboriginal himself. Sarah has also never before been accused of such a thing in her career, that is until "Lucille" - the conveniently anonymous - "every-woman waitress" dared to speak it in a frightened whisper! I love the smell of desperation in the morning. Pancakes with tiger butter please!

Johnny's Obama's Got A Gun! And It's Yours!

Just like the supposed book banning that Sarah Palin has been falsely accused of, Barry O. seems to have a ban controversy of his own. Except he might want your gun. He says he doesn't - and he probably won't try to take them - but only because it seems he doesn't have the votes!

“If you’ve got a gun in your house, I’m not taking it,’’ Obama said. But the Illinois senator could still see skeptics in the crowd, particularly on the faces of several men at the back of the room.

So he tried again. “Even if I want to take them away, I don’t have the votes in Congress,’’ he said. “This can’t be the reason not to vote for me. Can everyone hear me in the back? I see a couple of sportsmen back there. I’m not going to take away your guns.’’

Remember when you're weighing these two supposed bans - the one thing a powerful government really fears isn't books... it's a well armed citizenry.

Recalcitrant, Reluctant, and Resistant

I hate to change my mind. I rarely do. When I do it's only for what I think is an overwhelming reason and there's usually a long furrow in the dirt where I've been dragged forward like the most stubborn mule. Blame my mother, I inherited her sense of humor and distinct non-flair for undue cordiality.

After hearing Sarah Palin speak tonight, and after hearing people wiser than me speak over the last two nights, I will not say that I have changed my mind but I am willing to give John McCain a chance. One chance.

First let me reiterate why I am not happy about this decision and why I do not make it lightly.

I do not believe I am wrong about John McCain: he is not the best person the GOP could have nominated and conservatism is facing a major struggle with him in office. I stand by every criticism of him that I have made. I still predict - and will yell I TOLD YOU SO from the top of a mountain if I'm right - that we are not getting a conservative and that we are in for a long, tough four years with the Maverick as our commander-in-chief.

I fear that McCain may throw our borders wide open and millions of illegals will gain amnesty and jump to the front of the citizenship line ahead of deserving immigrants who did it the right way. I fear that he may mire us in bureaucracy that will play to the silly exaggerations and fear mongering of the global warming crowd. I fear he may bring more free speech stifling legislation like McCain-Feingold. I fear that he may unleash a horde of rabid civil rights lawsuits on our civilian court system by closing Guantánamo Bay. I fear that he may not appoint an Alito or Roberts to the Supreme Court but rather clones of Kennedy and Souter. I still believe his ego may be bigger than the office he seeks. I'm going to stay on McCain like white on rice and pound him about the political head and shoulders every time I disagree with him. There will be many such times.

Now, let me tell you why I can vote for McCain. Unlike Obama, there are several criticisms you cannot level at McCain. You cannot say he isn't a leader. You cannot say he will hesitate in the face of a challenge. You cannot say he has no experience making tough decisions. You cannot say he will back down from what he thinks is right unless he truly believes he should change his mind. You cannot say he will tell you one thing to your face and say another behind your back. I know it's hard to believe but I can appreciate someone who is blunt.

There is also the fact that the opposition candidate quite simply isn't up to the job of President. Rudy Giuliani said it best tonight:
And nearly 130 times, he couldn’t make a decision. He couldn’t figure out whether to vote “yes” or “no.” It was too tough. I didn’t know about this vote “present” when I was mayor of New York City. Sarah Palin didn’t have this vote “present” when she was mayor or governor. You don’t get “present.” It doesn’t work in an executive job. For president of the United States, it’s not good enough to be present.
Amen. You don't get to simply be "present" when the nation is under attack and people are dying. You don't get to simply be "present" when rogue nations and terrorists are calling for and plotting the destruction of your nation. You don't get to simply be "present" when your allies are being invaded and overrun. You don't get to simply be "present" when your desk is in the Oval Office.

You also don't get to slough off questions about your associations with known terrorists who to this day still wish they had done more to harm the United States and stand mockingly on an American flag in a dirty alley. You don't get to make speeches about wanting to bring change without offering details on how you intend to bring it about. You don't get to beg off hard questions about the world and what's happening in it by suggesting that we run to the United Nations every time a dictator farts in our general direction.

As for the argument that Joe Biden will bring some experience to Obama's administration - I don't consider that a good argument. Oh, Biden is experienced alright - he's been in the Senate since before I was in kindergarten. He's just not experienced in "change." He is, however, experienced in two things: 1) being wrong on almost every major foreign policy issue since the Cold War and 2) "quoting" other politicians.

There is also the matter of the rabid left. It's easy to forget how vicious and nasty they are between elections when they aren't as vocal or afraid. Well they've shown themselves true to form this past week by raking a mother and her handicapped child over the coals with smarmy rumor and innuendo meant only to hurt. The Kos Kids, Democratic Underground, Andrew Sullivan, and Keith Olbermann are like the "Girls Gone Wild" of politics - only without the virtue and good judgment. Does anyone else find it hypocritical that the Democrat party is suddenly concerned about the special role of a mother? Suddenly concerned about a woman with children working outside the home? Suddenly beating the "barefoot and pregnant" drum? Puhleeze. These people need less power - not more. After all, if Harry Reid can't stand John McCain, maybe there is something likeable about Senator F.U.

Say what you will about McCain, no matter how wrong I might think his plans are he can tell me why he thinks he's right and what he wants to accomplish and he loves his country first and he's proud of it - yesterday and today. Say what you will about Sarah Palin, she understands that public officials are public servants. She understands that government isn't meant to control us or give us our rights but to protect and foster the unalienable rights we are born with. Plus she hunts moose - come on, that's fantastic! Together I hope they can temper each other, she steering McCain toward the conservative principles he often seems to disdain, and he helping Palin hone her leadership skills for a future when she - and others of her generation - may be able to lead us back toward a strong and cohesive conservative movement.

I don't want any cheers, or hoots, or "welcome aboard" comments because I do not make this decision happily. The post title says it all. If I were one of the twelve disciples I'd be Thomas, because I will not believe McCain until I see him back up his words with actions on the border, and SCOTUS, and reforming government. And if at the end of four years he hasn't made good then count me out for 2012. But for now, let's get this election won and move forward.
