New Orleans Superdome Emptied; 7,000 New Troops Sent

"The Superdome has been evacuated," Lieutenant Kevin Cowan of the Louisiana Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness said in an interview.

Five days after the hurricane slammed into the U.S. Gulf Coast, conditions improved in parts of the city. More than 1,300 trucks carrying 17.1 million ready-to-eat meals were sent to the area, and law-enforcement officers have curtailed once-rampant looting, police said.

Three hospitals had emergency power restored and were open after evacuating almost all the patients housed at the time of the storm.

A street-by-street search began for survivors trapped in their homes and those who disregarded the evacuation order, Louisiana State Police Lieutenant Lawrence McLeary said. Officials also began recovering bodies today.
