AN AMERICAN SOLDIER, A HERO, A MARINE

"Dad, if I die, I did it doing my duty and protecting my country..."

Those were the words of Donald Ryan McGlothlin a Marine 2nd lieutenant assigned to Battalion Landing Team, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, based at Camp Pendleton, Calif. Ryan was killed during a firefight in Ubaydi, Iraq. His unit was part of Operation Steel, aimed at cracking down on the insurgency.

This was man who decided not to pursue his Ph.D because he wanted to do something that matterd. A top student, a good athlete, a good friend, son, and brother. He didn't have to go fight but he chose to do what he felt was right. He wanted to defend his country so he came home from Stanford and told his dad "I just don't feel like I'm doing something that matters. I want to serve my country. I want to protect our lands from terrorists, so I joined the Marines..."

Ryan, your nation is grateful beyond words.
