FILE THIS UNDER "LAME EXCUSES"

An American Airlines pilot of Flight 621, en route to Chicago, radioed air traffic controllers after takeoff from LAX. He told them a missile had been fired at the aircraft and missed. The plane was over water when the pilot said he saw a smoke trail pass by the cockpit.

Sounds scary, huh? Well it's even scarier after you hear the FBI say they "...believe it was a flare or a bottle rocket, but say they may never know if that's what it actually was." Excuse me? A bottle rocket? That must have been one hell of bottle rocket. Anyone that's ever had bottle rockets on July 4th knows that they hardly go as high as a jetliner. Do you get the feeling that they might know what it is, but they just don't want to tell us? Things that make you go hmmmmmm.

When I was a kid, we used to make our own model rockets. We made them out of steel tubing and used a mixture of zinc powder and sulphur. Those guys could really fly. There are amateurs who can send amateur rockets 20-30 thousand feet. I think the government has clamped down on serious rocketry hobbyists these days.
