It's not a time for cheers or celebration. It's a time to be sad. I woke myself up at 3:00am EST this morning in order to watch the coverage. As someone who called for Tookie's execution, I felt I should be awake for it. Execution may be a just punishment sometimes, but it is never a good thing. Justice was served, yes, but we all lose a little piece of ourselves when we must mete it out this way.

I don't know enough of the case to be able to comment authoratively. But I do know I find the death penalty abhorrent and can never see it as justice.
The TV reports here saw it in a negative light - not least because the killing itself seemed something of a farce.
He was a horrid murderer and the founder of one of the most violent street gangs in America.
You're wrong though, the death penalty is just, but it is not merciful.
