Pakistan: Court Orders Against Cartoon Blashphemers
Islamabad: Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ordered that a case be filed against the chairman of the country’s telecommunication authority and other officials for failing to block the showing of Danish newspaper cartoons caricaturising Prophet Muhammad. The apex court on Monday also ordered that a case be filed under section 295C of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) against the cartoonist, foreign newspapers and publishers.
“The police should register the petitioner’s case under section 295C of the PPC in the jurisdiction where the petitioner resides,” said the chief justice while ruling on a petition moved by Maulvi Iqbal Haider, the Awami Himayat Tehreek chairman, the Daily Times reported.
Section 295C prescribes the death sentence for offenders.
Haider had moved the court for registration of a criminal case against the people responsible for printing and propagating the Prophet Mohammad cartoons.
The chief justice said: “It is our religious duty to express sentiments against the blasphemous publication. A case should be registered against the people responsible at the very least to dissuade anyone blaspheming in the future.”
Besides blaming foreign authorities, the petitioner had also accused the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority of criminal negligence for not blocking websites showing the cartoons in Pakistan.
