Darfur, Clooney, and Mira Sorvino
What changed my mind? Listening to a clip of Clooney at the UN and an interview with Mira Sorvino on Fox News while she was taking part in the Save Darfur Rally @ Central Park. In part Clooney said:
"After Sept. 30 you won't need the U.N. You will simply need men with shovels and bleached white linen and headstones..."And Mira Sorvino reminded us that: "We say never again to the Holocaust, never again to Rwanda; ...this is again."
"The United States has called it genocide," Clooney told council members. "For you it's called ethnic cleansing. But make no mistake _ it is the first genocide of the 21st century. And if it continues unchecked it will not be the last."
"In many ways it is unfair, but it is nonetheless true that this genocide will be on your watch. How you deal with it will be your legacy, your Rwanda, your Cambodia, your Auschwitz."
Yes it is happening "again." There have been too many agains since we said no more. So, are we serious? Do we really mean what we say? If we do, we need to prove it; to ourselves and to the evil government in Khartoum.
Might I also point out, that Darfur is a front in the War on Terror as well? The government of Sudan is controlled by Islamic extremists - the same ones who once gave bin Laden safe haven - and the atrocities they are ignoring and aiding, are directed at Sudan's black, Christian and other non-Muslim population. God help the people of Darfur if their only hope is for the United Nations to take action.
