Fond du Lac Parents Want Controversial Book Out Of ClassFOND DU LAC — Some Fond du Lac parents have asked school officials to remove former U.S. poet laureate Maya Angelou's autobiography from the high school curriculum.
Students at Fond du Lac High School read "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" in sophomore advanced English classes.
But some parents have objected to passages that describe Angelou's rape and subsequent unwanted pregnancy. About 80 people attended a meeting Tuesday at the school this week to discuss the book and the request to remove it.
School Superintendent Gregory Maass said the initial complaint came from one family.
Okay, to that "one family" I offer the following advice:
- Remember, you live in America - censorship ain't the name of our game.
- Your "child" is a sophomore in high school in an advanced English class. Said child should be more than capable of dealing with the subject matter of Angelou's book.
- The school allowed your son/daughter to read another book (a courtesy I wouldn't have extended) so let him/her read the alternate and shut the f%ck up about it.
- Don't you dare try to foist your small minded values on anyone else. If you don't want to read "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" then don't; but don't you DARE tell anyone else what they can or can't read.
In short: grow up!
