Dictators Are As Dictators Do
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez backed the possibility of holding a national referendum, if he's re-elected, on whether to shut down private television stations that he has accused of subversive activities.Well, well, well Thuggo - we aren't a bit surprised. I wonder what sort of logical backflips Cindy Sheehan will go through to defend her lover Thuggo's decision to eliminate freedom of the press?
"That is perfectly possible," Chavez said. "It's perfectly possible that the country gives its opinion, including for how long."
Chavez also said he regretted not having shut down the country's major private broadcasters right after a short-lived 2002 coup against him, citing four in particular: Globovision, Venevision, RCTV and Televen.
UPDATE: I know you won't believe this, but Thuggo has won re-election by a wide margin. Duh.
Minutes after the results were announced, Chavez appeared on the balcony of the presidential palace singing the national anthem. He pledged to deepen his effort to transform Venezuela into a socialist society.
"Long live the socialist revolution! Destiny has been written," Chavez shouted to thousands of flag-waving supporters wearing red shirts and braving a pouring rain.
"That new era has begun," he said, raising a hand in the air. "We have shown that Venezuela is red!... No one should fear socialism... Socialism is human. Socialism is love," [war is peace, love is hate, it's all doubleplusgood right Thuggo? ed.] Chavez said. "Down with imperialism! We need a new world!"
