Apparently
Al Sharpton's ancestors were slaves owned by Strom Thurmond's family. Aside from the odd juxtaposition of two infamous political figures, I have to ask: so what? Unfortunately such genealogical curiosities will only be used by a huckster and race baiter like Sharpton for his own dirty political gain, even though he's been affected by slavery about as much as someone who can trace their roots to an enslaved ancestor in ancient Rome. In other words, not at all.
(Note: I'm from Mississippi, however genealogical research by my family members has shown that neither my maternal nor paternal ancestors owned slaves at the time of the Civil War nor as far back as the mid to late 1700's in the colonies of North Carolina and Georgia.)
