Gay Republican Wins Doraville City Council SeatThe second try at elected office proved the charm for Brian Bates, who handily won a seat on the Doraville City Council in the Nov. 6 voting after losing a close race two years ago.
Bates, who owns a fund raising and communications consulting group, took 58.3 percent of the vote, or 420 votes, to Matt Harner's 41.4 percent, or 298 votes, according to unofficial results available at press time from the DeKalb County Board of Elections.
"We had looked at the 60 percent margin as where we were shooting for, so we're right where we wanted to be," an elated Bates said Wednesday morning.
Bates will take office Nov. 19 to hold the District 2 seat for the remaining two years of the term of Tom Hart, who resigned for an unsuccessful mayoral bid. With the campaign now behind him, Bates said he's ready to roll up his sleeves and get to work.
The elections on Tuesday raised Georgia's number of elected gay officials to nine.
