Beheading of Wife Poses Another Test for U.S. Muslims
Read more...
The crime was so brutal, shocking and rife with the worst possible stereotypes about their faith that some U.S. Muslims thought the initial reports were a hoax.Whaaaat? Beheaded? The hell you say? Sigh! Gasp! Woe! Stop "testing" the poor Muslims! Haven't they been through enough already? So many Muslim lives were lost on the high-jacked planes on September 11th, all but one of the Muslims in the Mumbai siege were killed, and don't forget the daily death toll that keeps mounting from those darn explosive belts. How very mendacious of the AP to write this story as if this type of event is a rarity, rather than as common as Paris Hilton at Buckingham Palace. But are you really surprised?
The harsh reality of what happened in an affluent suburb of Buffalo, New York — the beheading of 37-year-old Aasiya Hassan and arrest of her estranged husband in the killing — is another crucible for American Muslims.

Hugh Jackman, the very cool actor whose name always sounds like the third line in a really filthy knock-knock joke, has dropped a few hints about his plans for MCing the Academy Awards this Sunday. No question, if he follows through with this then Jackman will deliver a dramatic change of pace from that Chris Rock disappointment a few years back:Let's face it, there's not much other reason to spend forty-eight hours of your life on what has become a boring celebutard spectacle of political posturing and meaningless self-congratulation that has little to do with its original purpose. I could do without the interpretive dance though, and I'm sure I don't want to hear Sean Penn sing a love song to his boyfriend-for-life Hugo...
CNN: The sexiest man alive” [is] going to be up there nude?
Jackman: Drunk and nude, yes. So that’s our new fresh approach. It’s the Australian way.

Al Qaeda Claims to Have Taken 2 U.N. Diplomats, 4 Tourists Hostage

Al Qaeda's North Africa branch claimed Wednesday it is holding hostage a senior U.N. peace envoy, his aide and four tourists kidnapped in the Sahara Desert in recent weeks.Tourists? Seriously? What the f-ck is there to "tour" in the middle of the desert on the Algeria/Mali border? I know Europeans have a liberal definition of what constitutes an acceptable "vacation" but you'd think even they might not be intrigued by sand, rock, and camel shit. Here's a pic from Google:
The United Nations special envoy for Niger, Robert Fowler, and his aide Louis Guay, both Canadian diplomats, were kidnapped Dec. 14 in the southern Sahara country.
Four tourists, including two Swiss, a German woman and a British man, were kidnapped by gunmen Jan. 22 near the border in neighboring Mali, their tour operator said.
"We announce to the general public that the mujahideen (holy warriors) reserve the right to deal with the six kidnapped according to Islamic Shariah law," Al Qaeda in North Africa's purported spokesman, Salah Abu Mohammed, told the pan-Arab TV station Al-Jazeera overnight Wednesday.

There, you've seen the middle of nowhere and didn't have to risk being kidnapped and beheaded by barbarians.

No Cyrano He
The President uses a teleprompter to feed him information and talking points during press conferences.
People were looking forward to having a well spoken President. Instead of Cyrano de Obamerac they've got a poor Mr. de Neuvillette wooing an enraptured press corp of Roxannes, sending "tingles" up their legs.

Venezuela Is Now Officially A Dictatorship
Chavez Wins Referendum to Eliminate Term Limits
Read more...
President Hugo Chavez won a referendum to eliminate term limits Sunday, paving the way for him to run again in 2012 — and beyond — and push through his vision of a socialist Venezuela.I certainly hope the Venezuelan people enjoyed this election because it's probably the last legitimate one they'll have for a long, long time. The country is now the personal fiefdom of a communist thug.

Does Sully Want Bipartisanship For Bipartisanship Sake?
Andrew Sullivan offers his perspective on the vote for the stimulus package. Considering his increasingly risible meandering into what the hell happened to you? land (Trig Palin anyone?), I don't think he should be so quick to throw around pejoratives like "autistic" and "ideological".
It seems to escape Andrew's understanding that the Republicans in Congress may actually be responding to the people who sent them to Washington. Bipartisanship simply for the sake of bipartisanship is not only stupid, but dangerous.

Poor Little Thing...
I've heard that Koala's are a tad feisty by nature, so I think it's amazing that they seem to know somehow that the people are trying to help them.
These fires have brought massive destruction, and death to hundreds of humans and countless numbers of wildlife. They appear to be acts of arson (actually terrorism might be a better term) and the police have arrested a suspect. If it is the bastard (or one of the bastards) who did this, I think burning at the stake would be appropriate.
Judd Gregg Stays In The Senate
Republican Sen. Judd Gregg withdrew his nomination as President Barack Obama's commerce secretary Thursday, citing "irresolvable conflicts" over the administration's stimulus bill and the upcoming 2010 census.
I'm not sure exactly why it took him so long to figure out he wouldn't fit in with the B. Hussein Obama administration, but I think he's made the right choice.
UPDATE: Newt Gingrich just opined that one reason the census was being moved into the hands of Rahm Emanuel - which helped bring about Gregg's departure - is that "left wing groups got very worried that having a conservative Republican in charge of the census would actually lead to an accurate count..."

Democrats Break Promise To Post Stimulus Bill Online For 48-Hour Public Airing
Good remark from House Republican Whip Eric Cantor: “Those in favor of speed over commonsense may just be afraid of letting the People know what they are ramming through.”

“The American people have a right to know what’s in this bill,” Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind) told HUMAN EVENTS after the press conference. “Every member of Congress -- Republicans and Democrats -- voted to post this bill on the internet for 48 hours, 48 hours ago. We’ll see if the Democrats keep their word.”Maybe gun control for liberals is a good idea. If they did carry guns, they'd just be constantly shooting themselves in the foot.
Actually -- as of 5:15 pm, the Democrats had broken their word. The stimulus bill -- which we still haven’t seen -- will be released late tonight and will be brought up on the House floor at 9 am tomorrow.
The following statement was released by Majority Leader Steny Hoyer at 4:57 p.m.:
"The House is scheduled to meet at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow and is expected to proceed directly to consideration of the American Recovery and Reinvestment conference report. The conference report text will be filed this evening, giving members enough time to review the conference report before voting on it tomorrow afternoon."

Utah's congressional delegation is calling President Obama's decision to move the U.S. census into the White House a purely partisan move and potentially dangerous to congressional redistricting around the country."Bipartisan" like hell.
Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, told FOX News on Monday that he finds it hard to believe the Obama administration felt the need to place re-evaluation of the inner workings of the census so high on his to-do list, just three weeks into his presidency.
"This is nothing more than a political land grab," Chaffetz said.
Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah, told the Salt Lake Tribune that the move "shouldn't happen." He and Chaffetz are trying to rally Republicans "before its too late."
"It takes something that is supposedly apolitical like the census, and gives it to a guy who is infamously political," Bishop said of Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, who would be tasked with overseeing the census at the White House.
The U.S. census -- a counting of the U.S. population -- is conducted every 10 years by the Commerce Department. Its results determine the decennial redrawing of congressional districts.

Until Republicans acted this week, the Senate was actually prepared to bestow hundreds of millions of dollars of stimulation for Hollywood. The “Hollywood clause” would have given movie studios special tax breaks and enabled them to depreciate the costs of production equipment at a quicker rate. Perhaps, however, Congress should consider reinserting that provision. Doing so would give us the perfect excuse to impose the types of compensation controls on the movie industry that President Obama is now demanding of other industries who receive federal help.Of course Ashton and Demi, and Cameron Diaz, and Julia Roberts, et. al. would have no problem agreeing to cap their salaries at $500,000 - or even lower if it would help The One! They would do that right? Right? Hey Ashton, just remember that if you take my money - then I get to come on the set and direct...
Unlike the greedy Wall Street executives though, who have torpedoed our economy by allowing federal bureaucrats to bludgeon them into making bad loans, Hollywood would surely understand the merit of pay caps. After all, it would enable the entertainment world to fulfill its pledge “to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other.” (Cut for laughter and gagging and take two!)

"Something needs to be done" is not a magic phrase. It also doesn't mean that "anything and everything" should be done. Of course with Republicrats like Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, and Arlen Spectre prowling the halls of the capitol there's no chance of stopping the bill.

Forget the icecaps, Victor Davis Hanson says there's a meltdown of epic proportion coming in the Obama White House. Our enemies are challenging us, Obama is flipping and flopping on his pretty campaign trail rhetoric (rendition and FISA anyone?), several of his key appointees are dusty if not downright dirty, and the Democratic Congress is set to use B. Hussein as a rubber stamp for their own agenda. Hanson draws the following conclusion: If he doesn't quit the messianic style and perpetual campaign mode, and begin humbly governing, then he will devolve into Carterism—angry that the once-fawning press betrayed him while we the people, due to our American malaise, are to blame.

My two cents on the latest confirmation dance is sure to disappoint my most partisan listeners: Tom Daschle should be confirmed quickly because (1) his biggest error it looks to me to be the sort of error that a former senior elected official used to riding around in government cars could easily make, while the others look like the screw-ups that a suddenly wealthy former senator could easily make, (2) he wouldn't have endangered his political career and ambitions for this amount of money given the huge income he had coming in, and (3) we absolutely have to fix the confirmation mess or more and more people will flee public service at the highest levels. Partisans tell me that giving passes to Secretary Geithner and now Daschle will never matter down the road when future GOP nominees run into trouble. Perhaps not. But a double dose of restraint when presented with the opportunity to slice and dice a nominee make the GOP's policy objections much more potent, and no matter how much you disagree with him --and I worked pretty hard for John Thune, twice, because I disagreed with Daschle a lot-- he is a good man and a smart one, and I'd rather have a center-left pro running DHS who will at least be open to the arguments of the big medical groups/hospitals/insurers than an ideologue from the university world.I disagree. The less we expect from "wealthy" politicians who've gotten "used" to riding around in government cars, the less we get. We've already got a head of the IRS who
