DEAN CALLS FOR END TO 'CULTURE OF CORRUPTION'
LEWISTON — The Bush White House is the most corrupt administration in U.S. history since President Warren G. Harding's, said Howard Dean during his first visit to Maine as chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Dean's comments Saturday came as top White House advisers are being investigated for their roles in the outing of a CIA operative and Tom DeLay, the former second-ranking Republican in the House of Representatives, faces conspiracy and money-laundering charges.
Was he in a coma from 1992 - 2000? No White House is perfect, certainly not W's, but come on. I guess it depends of what your definition of "corrupt" is. Billy certainly set a lot of precendents. During the Clintonian years we had:
- The only president ever impeached on grounds of personal malfeasance
- Most number of convictions and guilty pleas by friends and associates
- Most number of cabinet officials to come under criminal investigation
- Most number of witnesses to flee country or refuse to testify
- First president sued for sexual harassment
- First president accused of rape
- First first lady to come under criminal investigation
- Largest criminal plea agreement in an illegal campaign contribution case
- First president to establish a legal defense fund
- First president to be held in contempt of court
- Greatest amount of illegal campaign contributions
- Greatest amount of illegal campaign contributions from abroad
- First president disbarred from the US Supreme Court and a state court
And don't forget the "gates" he opened:
- Travelgate
- FBI Filesgate
- Buddahgate
- Gennifergate
- Paulagate
- Monicagate
- Kathleen Willeygate
- Whitewatergate
- Pardongate
Not to mention the freakin' impeachment! Puhleeezzz. W's snafu's don't even come close, but I guess the Dem's gotta play the hand that was dealt'em. Moral of this story: if you're a politician, no matter what your party affiliation, don't play the "corruption" or "ethics" card, because you'll just be pissing in the wind.
