He's at it again. Jimmy Carter is admonishing Israel and the United States to give Hamas a chance to govern. It won't be so bad he says, there are lots and lots of checks and balances on the power of the Palestinian Parliament. He puts forth a laundry list of reasons that are supposed to comfort us, such as President Abbas being Commander-in-Chief of the Palestinian military, having a veto over acts of Parliament, and the power to appoint and remove the Prime Minister. I would imagine Carter would have wanted to give Herr Hitler a chance to govern in 1933 as well, after all it's not like he could take over the entire German government, President Hindenburg would never allow it!
Carter's main point is that Israel and the U.S. not punish the Palestinian people by withholding aid and funding necessary to run the government. He suggests by-passing the Hamas led government and funneling the money through the United Nations. Because yeah, using the U.N. to distribute aid money has worked so well in the past.
I'm not sure anymore whether Carter is naive or just plain stupid, but I do know one thing, his advice is dangerous and we would do well to ignore it.

I think the word is 'desperate'. He knows that his legacy is gas lines, stagflation, 'malaise', and habitat-for-humanity.
He's desperately trying to latch on to something--anything. I think he would probably be a great guy to go golfing with, but politics is obviously not his forte.
I'd still like to add "stupid" to "desperate"...
